Today we have a review of two Silverstone Tech products for you lucky
readers; a transfer bracket and 3.5" Front I/O Module. While it's
not as flashy as a case, motherboard, or graphics card, these devices
are still very important in the PC industry. Arriving in a slightly
beat up version of our good friend Sir Brown Box, the packages were
retrieved unharmed from their protective cage of cardboard and packing
peanuts. At first site, we got a good impression of these devices. But
we must remember, appearances can be deceiving, and first impressions
can be wrong. So how well do these items really fair in their tasks?
Read on and find out!
Most PC cases are starting to come with one or no 3.5" drive bays for
Floppy drives. For many people, no love is lost, as many have not used
a floppy drive in years. For others though, a floppy disk drive is a
necessity that they still can't go without. Others might want to have
two of them available in order to get files onto the drives as quickly
as possible, although few fit this bill. Then there are others who
might want to put an IO panel, media card reader or some sort of
diagnostics device onto their case but only have 5.25" drives to work
with. If you need to get a 3.5" device into a 5.25" bay, this is
the product that you need; a 5.25" to 3.5" drive bay converter.
Exactly what you need.
With a gorgeous polished, anodized aluminum front panel, this converter
from Silverstone Technologies is an excellent way to fulfill your needs
for 3.5" devices. With solid construction and the option of putting
either a floppy disk drive, media drive reader, LCD screen bay, or even
an IO panel and hard drive, this device is quite flexible in its uses.
With good construction, perfect alignment of screw holes and a quality
finish, this device is nearly perfect for what it is designed to do.
Unfortunately, the drive bay only really looks good with the
Silverstone Tech 3.5" IO panel inside of it-unless yours has an
anodized aluminum front. But on the plus side, that gives you the
option to do this.
Hard drive too![/
Otherwise, your devices might look a little out-classed by the
Silverstone tech panel. In addition, there is about a millimeter of
extra space between the top and bottom of the installed 3.5" devices.
With the gap, uniformity is disrupted. Other than that, the Silverstone
5.25"" to 3.5" drive bay converter just really looks nice and does
what it's supposed to do almost perfectly. You can't get much
better than that.
So happy together, if only loosely
While the drive bay converter is a nearly perfect little device, it
does suffer from a couple of flaws, which drag its rating down a bit to
a 90 on our scale. As a one function device, I expect it to do what
it's supposed to as close to perfection as possible. The gaps between
the top and bottom are all that stop this device from getting a perfect
100.
Pros:
Excellent Construction
Great Finish
Cons:
Might out-class the rest of your system in looks
3. 5" device tops are not flush with the top panel.
