Bringing to the table a new method of cable organization in tandem with
spectacular aesthetic appeal, the Ultra X-Connect Titanium 500w PSU
arrived on the doorstep courtesy of my good friend, Sir Brown Box.
After digging through a few air-filled padding bags, I found the grail
of overall power supplies. Looks like we have another contender on our
hands for Power Supply 2004. Upon opening the box, I spent nearly as
much time admiring the cables as the enclosures finish. Check out this
top of the line power supply.

The box was well packed, making use of every possible inch of space.
Adequately padded and protected against the hazards of shipping,
everything in the box was well preserved upon arrival.

The beautifully polished titanium finish is a perfect compliment to the
rest of the X-Connect arsenal of great features and performance. As you
can see, it's very close to a mirror finish with a small amount of
distortion in the reflections. To further show that, I put a tin of
Penguin Mints next to it. The highly reflective finish makes it a prime
candidate to put inside of a case with a side window that, like many
cases today, integrate cold cathodes or some other source for internal
lighting. Be careful with the finish if you're going to open the PSU
up; other than avoiding capacitor discharge, you don't want to ruin the
immaculate finish on this power supply's enclosure.
Moving on to the revolutionary approach on cable organization and
airflow. Now days, most cable organizing systems try to compact your
cables, make their surface area smaller and neatly tucked away in order
in gain airflow. Ultra has taken a different approach to the cabling
issue: why have cables when they aren't being used? The Ultra X-Connect
allows you to only attach the cables you need, to help maximize
airflow. Each "port" that the cables attach to on the main enclosure
has it's own black cover to avoid dust build up and any accidents. On
top of that, the cables are sleeved very professionally with UV
reactive, transparent tubing and some silver/chrome mesh covering the
wires themselves. Very flexible and clean looking, both the sleeving
and the approach to minimize the amount of cables is exquisite.

To test the UV reactive sleeving, Ultra sent along a few extra's. A set
of Dual 12" UV Cold Cathodes, a set of 2x 80mm UV Fan CCFL's (denoted
as "supper brite" on the package, yes supper.;)), and a UV reactive
(blue) 80mm fan. As you can see in one of the pictures, the difference
between a UV reactive, and non-UV reactive fan is obvious, with the one
on the right being UV reactive. The sleeving glows a gentle blue and is
definitely reactive. If you get just the right distance away from the
tubing with the UV light, it looks almost like a ghost effect outlines
the sleeving. In tandem with the reflectivity of the power supply, the
UV lights and reactive sleeving added a nice touch for when the lights
go out.
The rail stability on the X-Connect is rather good, not quite as tight
as the 510 Deluxe, but they're close and for the MSRP difference, an
obvious choice unless you want the closest possible to immaculate
performance. While the -12v rail is slightly under-voltage as with the
-5v, it's not enough to be overly concerned. The -12v does falter below
a -5% tolerance while clean, which is a little peculiar but the rest of
the rails, especially the 3.3v, +5vSB and +5v lines are solid. Overall,
there is plenty of stability to keep your Über Computer running at
full power.

Conluding this review, the Ultra X-Connect power supply is a fairly
good buy. For around $100 depending on where you purchase it, the
X-Connect has a nice bundle of features. Superb sleeving, a tantalizing
titanium finish, adequatly stable rails, and a flawless new way to
attack cable organization and airflow issues. While I'm surprised that
it didn't come with a single S-ATA power cable, I noticed on the site
that you purchased one recently, you are able to get a free S-ATA cable
( Here).
All of this comes together to create one great power supply. The
X-Connect receives a rating of 96%, the Gold Award, and Bleeding Edge
Tech Award for their unique way of attacking the issue of cable
management.
