No self respecting computer enthusiast leaves their computer in a stock
configuration, in either hardware, software, or appearance. To create
an appearance more suited to a user's wants, most enthusiasts will
either mod the case to a significant degree, often adding a case
window, lighting up the insides, creating enough glow to light a small
room. Adding all the lights and getting them to match can be a pricey
hassle. Fortunately, companies like MGE provide kits perfectly suited
for this task; today, we are reviewing MGE's Extreme Mod Kit. How
much bling can it add to your PC? Read on and find out!
Behold the beauty of the kit
The Extreme Mod Kit contains the most common elements of
"conventional" pc modification; A Cold Cathode, Light emitting
diodes, Rounded IDE and Floppy Cables and a LED lit case fan. Also
included are mounting screws and Velcro lined with sticky tape. All
told, MGE's XG division offers a very complete package.
Speaking of boxes
I have previously had some lousy experiences with rounded IDE cables. I
have tried two different types of rounded cables before, and each time
one of them didn't work. However, with the Extreme Mod Kit, I got my
first pair of rounded cables that actually worked when I installed
them. Props go out to XG for providing rounded cables that actually
work. The Ultraviolet ones look spectacular as well.
This image speaks for itself.
The Cold Cathode is bright, and its inverter is clean and easy to use.
However, the cathode could use improvement. The cable going out to the
cathode could be a bit longer, as currently it takes a bit of work to
get it into the right spot. The cathode also was pulled right out of
its plastic case by accident as well; a better attachment is
recommended. Finally, the inverter switch cable is a tad too short. The
elements of the cathode kit are where I would like to see the most
improvement.
Could use some cable fixings, but it certainly looks good.
Also included with the kit are two light emitting diode sets; one laser
light emitting diode and three ultraviolet highlight diodes in a chrome
case. Bright and attractive, these two sets of lights provide very good
lighting for your case. The cables are a good length as well. These
things alone are enough to provide a good glow to the majority of your
case.
Excellent light emitting diodes
To cool your computer, the MGE Extreme Mod Kit also contains an 80mm
fan that contains four light emitting diodes. I am satisfied with this
fan, as it is not audible over any other components in my system. It
makes a bit of noise with your ear right up to it, but like I said,
other parts are louder. The light emitting diodes are excellent as
well. However, the molex connections on the fan are extremely loose. I
was able to pull them right out of their plastic container with hardly
any effort at all. This really should be addressed to reduce the risk
of electrical shorts.
The cool offender
To mount all this kit, the Extreme Mod Kit comes with screws and
contains sticky tape backed Velcro. The Velcro is easy to install, and
it is easy to pull off whatever you attached to it. It won't come off
with a jolt, or most other accidents with the case. Props go out to MGE
for providing such high quality Velcro.
XG's Extreme Mod Kit provides a flashy appearance, but installation
reveals a few underlying flaws, mostly relating to just a bit too
short, or loose, cables. Then again, maybe my choice of component
placement is just a bit out of the ordinary. The XG Extreme Mod Kit
makes a great addition to any computer case with a window. For
combining excellent lighting, efficient cooling and decreasing noise
output into one easy to set up kit, The XG Extreme Mod Kit earns an 80
our scale and our silver award. All XG needs to earn gold is some
improvements in the cable department.
Pros:
Easy to set up
Looks fantastic
Unless you have an utterly silent system already, the fan will make things quieter
Cons:
Some cables a bit loose or too short
Special Thanks go out to MGE XG for making this review possible.
