MSI PC2008 in Taipei Event Exclusive (Part 2: Upcoming Santa Rosa NB)
"Robson technology or Turbo Memory is also part of the new Centrino Duo platform, although as this is still rather expensive, it is unlikely that most notebooks will ship with a Turbo Memory module fitted. It will also be interesting to see what impact Turbo Memory has on overall system performance, as ReadyBoost did not prove to be a huge hit. Other news includes support for draft 802.11n wireless networking, again something that only higher-end models are likely to ship with. SATA 3Gb/s is part of the new ICH and this should allow for somewhat improved performance. Intel has also added support for Intel Matrix RAID, which is interesting, so we might see a lot more notebooks with twin hard drives in the near future. On the integrated graphics side of things, a new GMA has been developed, the X3100, which according to Intel offers twice the performance in 3DMark06. It also adds Vista Premium certification, HDMI support and better video playback performance for high-definition content. At the same time as Intel launched the new Centrino platform, Nvidia also announced its GeForce 8M series of graphics cards, which are mobile versions of the 8400 and 8600 series. These are already available in several Centrino Duo models from MSI as well as other manufacturers and this is the route to go down it you really intend to play games on your notebook. So let us take a look at what was on at the show."

MSI GeForce NX8800GTX OC Liquid Water cooling vs. the 8800 Ultra
"We have not seen MSI venture to water cooled cards before and the 8800 GTX is still of a bit of an untapped market for this. Asus has an Aqua model which uses the aging Tide Water system from Thermaltake. This particular system is not too quiet, takes up a load of room, and is generally pretty inefficient. The only other company to have a water cooled card is BFG Tech but its version is a bit more hardcore, it is only for people who already have a water cooled system in their case. MSI on the other hand seems to use its own design which unlike the Tide Water looks to cool everything from the GPU to the memory and unlike the BFG Tech is an all in one system making it a good option for people who do not really know what they are doing."

RyderMark Beta 2 Preview - Emerging competition for Futuremark?
"But what is RyderMark and what makes it different from say 3DMark06? Well, let us try to break things down. We will start with what it is not and that is a DirectX 10 benchmark. However, a DirectX 10 version should be coming out at a later stage. What it is on the other hand is rather interesting; Candella Software, the company behind RyderMark, claims that it is based on a real game engine. Now that sounds familiar, anyone want to give the guys over at Futuremark a call and see what games use their engine? Anyhow, what we have got here is a very advanced benchmark that allows you to test a whole range of new features that have so far not been available. It can test features such as Parallel Occlusion Mapping, a very advanced form of Bump Mapping and it supports 32- and 64-bit HDR Lighting with Anti-Aliasing. Furthermore it does Shader model 2.0 and 3.0, Soft Shadows, Normal Mapping, Soft Particles, Full Scene Motion Blur, Depth-of-Field, Heat Haze, Volumetric Fire and Realistic Water Physics, although we have to say that some of those features do not look that impressive, at least not on the graphics card we tested with. If you have played Supreme Commander you will think the water and fire sucks, but I guess the engine used is already getting outdated. The smoke effects did not look that amazing either."

Razer Pro|Type Keyboard Review
A lot of the initial excitement about the Pro|Type has had to do with its integrated iPod dock. The Tarantula has a modular bay that can be outfitted with a number of different accessories, like a light or speakers, and other things that can be useful to gamers. The Pro uses this space for an iPod, something that a lot of people, designers or otherwise, will be able to take advantage of. It's a bit gimmicky, but definitely useful. The dock is fully functional, so it can be used to charge or sync your iPod, as well as give you a safe place to stay put when not in use. They keyboard takes this notion a step further by including a line-out jack so that the iPod can connect to speakers without the computer.

Is Dell Good For Ubuntu?
There are many upsides that come along with the Dell/Ubuntu deal. These have been widely discussed, such as hardware compatibility, user support (a mixed blessing if you have to work with Dell), the ease of purchasing a custom Linux machine, and the competitive prices that Dell can offer. During an initial consideration is seems like there are no serious downsides to this, after all up to this point there have not been many places to buy a custom computer with desktop Linux pre-installed. Even so, we have very few details on how Dell with actually go about offering Ubuntu so there might be some surprises on the way. What could go wrong with Dell offering Ubuntu? While we have high hopes for it, there are always concerns.

Gigabyte P35-DQ6 & P35-DS3 Review
Just like with X975 and P965, Intel is appearing on the market with two basic versions of the chipset, "performance desktop X38" as opposed to X975, and "mainstream desktop P35" as opposed to P965. The first and basic novelty is concerning the manufacturing process, as the chipsets are being manufactured in 65nm which facilitate lesser consumption of energy and better overclockability. Is P35 chipset a worthy successor to previous generation?

Titan Mini 2.1 Speakers Review
"The Titan Mini 2.1 Speakers were easy to setup and use, but how much benefit do they provide? The quality was not that much above my old laptop's speakers and many newer laptops today are featuring better built-in speakers. The added burden of carrying around another set of speakers may offset the benefit, and if you use a USB port to power the speakers, you're not saving battery life either."

SOAP 2GB MP4 Player Review
"Here is the MP4 Player. It is about as generic as a product can get, as there is no brand, country of origin, marketed by, or any other identifying marks anywhere on the box, the player itself, or included documentation. After some Googling, I have pretty much determined that this is probably an "S1 MP3 Player", a mass-produced, Chinese made, MP3 player, this one being capable of showing videos, hence an MP4 player."
