Cooling Solution Overview

Inside this Blisterpack is the subject of today’s review: The RX K8.

Thermaltake’s Silent Boost RX K8 heatsink/fan combination is an interesting tool free copper heatsink fan designed for AMD’s Athlon 64 series of processors. Made completely from copper, its many fins provide a lot of surface area for cooling.

This heatsink also maintains compatability with both 80mm and 90mm fans if you wish to install a third party cooling device; a useful feature for those looking for higher performance, or even quieter, cooling.

The bottom of the RX K8 is made from a single large copper block. The lapping job is a bit rough. It’s not bad for a relatively inexpensive cooling solution, but it would be nice to see a mirror like surface. However, its nothing a little good quality thermal paste wont fix.

One of the RX K8’s chief selling points is its ease of installation. This heatsink clips onto the notches on the stock retention bracket. The installation is straightforward, and directions are provided just in case you have difficulty. Giving credit where credit is due, this is the easiest heatsink I have ever installed; the contact is also quite solid for the simplistic nature of the mechanism. This is a really good design Thermaltake; Kudos for the engineering on this!

The fan mount housing is a bit wobbly; the screws provided are also incredibly small, so tightening them is difficult. It would probably be better if they were slightly larger to provide a tighter fit, and less potential for noise vibration.

As Thermaltake claims, this heatsink is indeed very, very quiet in actual operation. While its not perfectly silent, it is quite good at elimintating the vast majority of system noise, leaving it quieter than most other background sounds audible from the testing area.
