Still about as old as the original, Team Arena adds many new features and qualities to the already excellent Quake 3 Arena.
Quake 3 Arena started with FPS, where it's you versus the world in a
free for all battle. The multiplayer added a few modes but didn't
really bend further than Capture The Flag or Team Deathmatch. With the
release of Team Arena, the singleplayer game was morphed into a
multitude of different modes(that are also available in multiplayer),
where you are on a team with bots as you battle the opposing team.
Quake 3 Team Arena updates nearly every aspect of Quake 3 Arena in
something that could be a stand alone game. In addition to graphical
updates, you are also part of a clan on the game which determines your
logo which appears in the game and your characters outfit, as shown
here:
There are many modes in Team Arena, including Capture the Flag,
Tournament and the new One Flag CTF, Harvester, and Overload modes,
along with a few other modes of gameplay. In Overload your objective is
to destroy the opponents skull, placed inside their base, by shooting
at it until it explodes.
The graphics have greatly improved over the originals and the games
movement is much more fluid. The player models are of higher polygon
counts and look much better. The enviroments gained a vastly improved
lighting system and enviroment effects, such as water movement and sky.
One of the most intriguing new features to the game, along with new
Carried Items like Kamikaze, there are now Power-ups. They range from
increasing your firing rate and run speed but giving you no armor, to
doubling your damage, to giving you regenerating ammunition. These
power-ups are extremely powerful and can be the difference in a lot of
battles as to who is the victor. Pictured is the Scout power-up, which
increases your attack speed and running speed, but discards any armor
your wearing and prevents you from picking up any.
Quake 3 Team Arena exceeds its predecessor easily, giving it a 90. The
pros are numerous which include: a wide variety of fresh features,
great gameplay, good replay value, large amount of levels, plus you can
create your own levels still. I thought they they could've added more
than just 3 weapons to the game. It has some AI quirks, like they get
stuck when following you, or they won't be able to find their way to
you when you give them an order. The team members also get in your line
of fire often, which is annoying and hazardous when Friendly Fire is
activated. It's a game worth buying and definetely a LAN candidate.
