Ultra Fan Commander PDF Print E-mail

Transport caused no problems that we noticed; unscathed, the Fan Commander comes with a few included items. You get 3 wires for the thermal sensors, 7 for the fans, two faceplate (black/aluminum), two batteries, and the tools to change the faceplate. All of the cables are sleeved in silver braid which protects them from sharp edges and helps to avoid airflow restriction.

Installation of the Fan Commander is no more a challenge than installing an optical drive in your case; pretty easy. We do suggest connecting the cables that you're going to use before putting the Fan Commander in your case; while you might have to navigate the cables, trying to get them connected to the Fan Commander once it's in the case may turn out to be a much harder task.

On the subject of pushing in the cables: when plugging them into the Fan Commander we had a little trouble. The plugs are set back from the plastic enclosure to the point where it forces you to grab on to the cable and try to push it on to the pins. Since you can't push on the plastic connector and you're pushing on the cable, it's a little bit of an aggravation to get them to sit into the slots all the way. Some of them went smoothly, others (like the Power) were a pain. If the slots were closer to the edge of the enclosure or the cables had stiffer end sections, the problem would be remedied.

The three thermal sensors are great and work very well. Luckily the cable lengths are in that happy medium where there's enough to get there but not a ton leftover to hang around; of course for the fan cables the excess is based on fan location as well. After adhering the thermal sensors and rigging up our fans, we went ahead and plugged in the power and were greeted with a glowing blue bay.

Showing off individual fan speeds using RPMs and a graph, as well as cycling through system temperatures (wherever you put the thermal sensors), displaying the time/date, and HDD activity are presented on screen for you to easily read and access.
