Power supplies are just one more component to some people There's no difference in quality, power is power right? Not at all. A quality power supply can make or break a system. All your components draw power and if your PSU provides dirty power, it could take out the rest of your rig. Finding that great deal where you get a solid PSU for a discount price is what we're all after. Ultra has been making power supplies for a while and their new release is the X-Finity 2nd Generation. Utilizing new FlexForce cabling and Dual Rail Technology, will the X-Finity 2nd Generation be a cornerstone to build your next system with? or is it the newest fashion in paper weights? Lets find out.

Product: Ultra X-Finity 500w PSU 2nd Generation
Manufacturer: Ultra
MSRP: $99.99 USD

  • FlexForce Cabling
    • Easier cable management and better airflow
  • Dual Rail Technology
    • Dedicated 12v Rail for CPU

Power supplies can be quite expensive and the balance that one looks to achieve is between price and quality. Ultimately, you'd like to get the best quality for a minimal price, but that's not always a viable option; sometimes you've to spend some more cash to get high quality. Provided that they give your rig power, the PSU is extremely important and must be a stable, solid component. Some voltage fluctuations can cause reboots or slowdowns: disrupting the users experience; other variations can completely revamp hardware into scrap which is a tad more than just a nuisance.

X-Connect (top) and X-Finity 2nd Generation (bottom).

Ultra has been well known since the debut of the modular X-Connect; being able to plug in only the cables you need not only increased airflow but also helped with stability. Interestingly enough, while the X-Finity 2nd Generation does not utilize modular cabling, it does have it's own cable management system: FlexForce. FlexForce working together with Dual Rail Technology, the 2nd Generation X-Finity aims to be not only to remain manageable and airflow friendly, it also looks to be much more stable. Separate 12v rails (one directed specifically for the 2x2 motherboard connector) supposedly increases stability. As we've seen with other Dual Rail power supplies, if the individual rail current isn't high enough or the user doesn't take proper course, the rails may be overloaded and cause more problems than improvements. Luckily the X-Finity 2nd Generation has a pretty strong current for the 12v rails: 12v1: 16A and 12v2: 18A.

Now that you've got a little background on the PSU let's get to work!
