The Viewsonic KU206 PDF Print E-mail
Written by RotoSequence
Quirky, but well made, stylish and comfortable. Today's review is of the new ViewSonic Viewmate Miultimedia USB keyboard. (KU206)

The keyboard in all its glory

This sleek little number is what I decided to give a try to replace my old worn out piece of junk generic keyboard. So how well does this keyboard work? Well, as I have found, it is a fun little bugger to use, but it requires some getting used to, due to some slight variations in key placement over the standard model. As you can see, the right hand shift key now has the \ | key next to it. It might be a little annoying if you tend to use the right shift key and use the dissapointed emoticon in MSN very often. Others shouldnt have any problem getting used to this keyboard as far as layout is concerned.

Now that layout concerns are out of the way, how well does it perform? Well, this keyboard is most definitely far quieter than the previous one that I used; a major plus when hanging out with family members who are easily annoyed by the clicking sounds produced by cheap keyboards. This keyboard is also comfortable over extended periods of time, which is a must for those who either surf the inernet a lot of the time or do a lot of their business or school work on them.

Unfortunately, this keyboard is not without issues. The most noticeable one is that when not using the wrist wrest that the keyboard comes with, your hands will be resting against a hard plastic edge that cuts off circulation to your hands. You have to be nuts not to attach the wrist wrest that this keyboard comes with. I honestly think that the only reason they even made the thing detacheable was to allow people to use one of their choice. It is comfortable and easy to use with it; genuinely painful without. However, yet another annoying problem arises when you install the wrist wrest. The keyboard only has one elevation setting, which is only 3/4" higher than normal. I found this extremely annoying, so I had to do a little "modding" to make it suit my tastes.

Lego mods... Now I've seen everything

Despite these annoyances, all of them are easily remedied and arent all that much of an issue. This keyboard has some real modding potential, thanks to the gap underneath the keys. It would be a simple task to get some El-wire to make a glowing keyboard. In addition, the simple, clean design also has the potential for elaborate paint schemes.

Pros:
  • Quiet
  • Stylish
  • Comfortable
  • Quality construction
  • Lots of Modding Potential

Cons:
  • Semi-quirky key layout in a couple of places
  • Limited height adjustments
  • Wrist wrests are a must!

All in all, this is a well made keyboard with plenty of features, options and potentential for modding. Its not perfect, but I would definitely reccomend this keyboard to anyone who is in need of a new keyboard for a low price.
