CreativeMods.com Article PDF Print E-mail
Written by [t0rc]
CreativeMods.com owner, sp0om, has had an interview with me and I have written an article on his site. Its a great read, about a great site, and helps to learn how one of the best sites around began.
Computer modding sites are sprouting up all over the place, and one that has emerged from the crowd is CreativeMods.com. After visiting the site a few times, and seeing it on many an affiliate list, I was really interested in the site. Using news to its full potential, the site has many links to reviews from other sites. But don't mistake this for a portal because right at the top, there is a list of the most recent reviews.

Well written reviews of some great modding products, like the recent review of El Wire or the review of a Sunbeam Fan Duct Kit. They are thorough and give the facts. Also the reviews provide uses/ideas for the product.

Having visited this site often, I decided to join the Forums. A small community that is quickly maturing, the CreativeMods forums are a great place to post your work and mods, and get honest opinions, suggestions, and replies back. General discussion threads are thriving as always, and there is always someone else online. The small community allows, in my opinion, relations to form on a more personal level. You get to learn what the person that is posting is like, and what their interested in. An asset that some large forums lack. If you post a supposed "n00b" question, your not going to get flames back.

CreativeMods.com is an efficient site, and a must see on the modders list. Check it out. The time and effort that has been put into it, has been worth it.

Now on to my interview with sp0om:

Torc: What was your inspiration/motivation to really start modding and begin the site?

sp0om: My original inspiration was afro man.  He had some sweet ass mods.  if you have seen my first case before, you would might be able to understand my love for ghetto mods.  I saw his site and had a few ideas of my own for some ghetto mods.  There was the ghetto airfilters guide, ghetto rubber washers, and the duct tape guide.

Torc:  What does CreativeMods.com represent/stand for?

sp0om: Creative mods.com represents the modding community.  The site is geared towards its members and helping them get the most out of their case modding experiences.  Being able to share ideas and thoughts with other modding enthusiasts is a good way to build a sense of community and respect between other modders.

Torc: Whats your background computer-wise? Any recent mods?

sp0om: IÂ’ve done quite a bit of modding myself.  It started with my first poopy stock case.  I put a side window, with a 120mm fan, and a top window with 3 80mm fans.  After all of the cutting, I duct taped the thing.  I believe I was the first ever to do such a terrible thing to a computer case.  The next case I did was fairly simple.  It had a premod window on the side so I decided to spice it up by cutting a window on top.  I saw a wild guide on adding leopard skin to a case on metku, and I tried it out.  It looked pretty cool, but was very susceptible to static electricity (I zapped it after walking across the carpet.  My hdd freaked out).  Next case was what I entitled Trif3cta (3 120mm blowholes on top) its still needs some white cathodes which I have been holding off for several months nowÂ…. Well, anyways, I have another project going on currently.  Black outside, black inside with uv reactive stuff inside.  The project is moving slowly because IÂ’ve been quite busy lately.

Torc: How long has the site been up?

sp0om: Since September 2003.  It was a piece of crap site back then.  I barely knew how to use html tables.

Torc: Are you going to attend QuakeCon 2004?

sp0om: If someone would fly me there :D

Torc: Do you favor a small or large modding community?

Well, I like the small community.  It certainly has its advantages over larger communities as well as its drawbacks.  Although it is still a small community, I still am very proud to be a part of it.  IÂ’ve enjoyed seeing it grow and mature in less than a year now.  I have plans to make it as useful and friendly modding forum around.

Torc: Anyone you'd like to thank or final thoughts?

sp0om: All of the amazing modders out there that inspired me to get into this whole thing.  Afro man and thwo1f in particular.

A hefty thanks goes to sp0om of  CreativeMods.com for having this interview with me.
